I am very pleased to announce that I have been able to begin including voice therapy at Augusta Health in addition to the other transgender care services we offer at Augusta Health beginning in the next month to six weeks.
In the past two years I have been able to begin coordinating the following services at my health care system. We now offer individual, group, marriage and family therapy which I personally provide. I also now can arrange for primary care, HRT for both m2f and f2m, second opinion letters, and cosmetic dermatology in a very supportive atmosphere within a system that has interdisciplinary coordination of care.
We accept all insurances, all but one pay for transgender psychotherapy and some provide coverage for hrt, bloodwork and mammography. We also offer very generous financial assistance. Patients can earn 150% of the Federal Poverty guideline and recieve 100% free care for most of these services. We offer sliding scale up to 250% of the Federal Poverty Guideline which can also be applied to copays if you have insurance.

Comment by Rachel King on September 9, 2011 at 8:13pm Congratulations on putting your "money where your mouth is" Sherri.
You are one of the few here that "Stand Tall" in being active in changing the world we are stuck in and I wish you and your Staff every success.
I hope that many girls take advantage of your Centre, it is a wonderful step forward for transwomen.
I did establish all of these services, though I do have to say I have a supportive administration which has allowed this to come to fruition. Really though, the credit goes largely to the other health care providers that I have approached and who have not just have been willing but have been going out of their way to suppport my dream of creating something more than just the therapy I can provide. I have a psychiatrist, a dematologist, two primary care physician and two gynecologists who are so supportive of these efforts and now enlisting the speech path department is a huge development for our hospital system. My next goal will be to recruit a surgeon who would be interested in practicing in the Shenandoah Valley to provide GRS. If you all have any leads please be sure to pass them on.
Cerise, I'd love it if you would write here about your experiences with the APA, that is history that we need to all be aware of and not lose.
Comment by Traci O'Gara on September 10, 2011 at 10:47am Sherri...this is awesome! But Fisherville is so far from population centers. I'm very curious as to where you see your clients/patients coming from?
Best wishes for a long and successful endeavor!!!

Most of my patients come from southwestern Virginia and from West Virginia. Most of the people in population centers go to northern Virginia and Richmond and Norfolk. The exception being James Madison University, Bridgewater College and Mary Baldwin College students because they are here and not at home. I too was surprised 17 years ago how many of us are living in rural environments. It's not uncommon to have a patient drive 3 hours or more to seek services from me and my health care system. What has surprised me is the sheer numbers of patients seeking my services.
Comment by Traci O'Gara on September 10, 2011 at 11:44am Wow! I am surprised....well then your location is ideal being there at I-64 and I-81....
All the best!

Comment by Jamie Robin Gardner on September 10, 2011 at 2:53pm Congradulations on getting care for the TG community in your part of the country. I know it took alot of work on your part and of others. Many thanks for your time and effort. I hope the community takes advantage of all you offer. I almost wished I lived there.
Comment by Marsha M. Marsha on September 11, 2011 at 8:35am Sherri, I'm very proud of you and the advancements for the transgender patients you have acheived in Virginia. Way to go, girl.
Augusta Health Care: sounds like a great idea!
Getting all of those TG services all in one place can boost the local a lot. It would be terrific for the community as well. As soon as we complete our sessions we can go hit the links and see if we can top Tiger's score on the last tournament. (Yeah, I know that Augusta is a bit further South)...
Fabulous work, Sherri. No doubt it will be one that lasts for a long time.
Wellllll, now that is VERY tempting! Makes me want to skip WPATH on Sunday!
