"We are One"

I don't usually get weepy over the death of a celebrity, but I was on my lunch break at work eating at my desk when glancing at the headlines only 4 minutes prior I saw "Donna Summer Dies". I immediately got very sad because I admired her greatly. She not only was a fabulous singer and the godmother of music Madonna and Lady Gaga would bring to another level, but a beautiful woman who also sang about women's issues. I love to dance, she was the "Queen of Disco" and I will miss her very much as I am certain her 4 children, husband and 4 grandchildren.

She is quoted as saying, "I am an ordinary girl who did extraordinary things." We also may be as her. I can't sing like her or look as beautiful but I can take what God has given me and be the best woman I can, and so may all of us.

I did then, and I do now (I'm a life-long musician) think Disco Sucks.  But Donna Summers never did.  Not then.  Not now.  She was a 'real' singer who feel, accidentally (her own stories) into the disco gig.  And it is the kind of dream all musician's have- to find something financially lucrative so you can pay the rent while continuing to perform your 'art'.

So many of the great ones have passed on. Of course when you are my age, most of the ones you knew and loved are gone. Such is life I guess, but it really does sadden me. I cried buckets when Karen Carpenter died.

Sure I liked two songs from Donna Summers, but I could hardly be called a fan.  I did like how Marsha tied her life into her own.  By seeing the greatness in others hopefully we can improve what is great within us.  At least that is my plan for me...

Interesting her death impacted me, too, in a way I hadn't been prepared for.  Given my age, my therapist once asked, "Given that you only have a few more years until retirement, have you considered postponing your transition until then?"  Honestly, it was a logical question.  Perhaps, too, it was a probe for how much duress was I under?  Could being TG simply wait? And here I was being reminded by Donna Summers early death that not another single day is promised to us.  This fact I was well aware of and I was reminded of again this Monday when I went into anaphylactic shock from a prescription medication, a single dose, and was basically helpless on the floor unable even to call out to people that were right next door. My answer to that "wait for later question" was a step of self love. My answer to my therapist, "I want to live before I die."

And that would be my advice to those in their 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s who are struggling with should I just wait this thing out? Live before you die and do whatever it is that makes you feel as if you have lived.

And to quote Rodney Dangerfield in a way few will ever quote him, "Do not go gentle into that dark night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light..."

So Donna Summers passing reminded to me live as best I can...
