Comment by HELEN BRADY on May 18, 2012 at 3:13pm The referenced article was very good and expressed what I consider to be an excellent framework for raising children.
I believe that my first wife was very homophobic, if my son was gay, she would have gone crazy, but I would have just accepted that he was born that way. What would she think (she is deceased) about my transition?
Probably like a few others I know: that I have gone crazy!
Comment by Catina Merlin on May 18, 2012 at 9:24pm Sadly, it is my thought that there are some people that are so locked in to gender oriented cultural programming that they fail to make room for difference of opinion. It seems that the basic emotion "fear" overrides openness to new ways of living our lives and appreciating the needs of others. I like the old saying "Having found we were doing things the wrong way... we decided to redouble our efforts!
Comment by Jenn on May 19, 2012 at 3:51pm Catherine's son, Ben, a child of twelve, so reminds me of my youth and how I longed to be a girl. I love what he's done with his long hair coloring the ends bright red. Is he going through a phase or is he already expressing who he really is, a girl? He/she will have to tell us. It's to Catherine's credit as a mom that she's letting her son find him/her self. It is unfortunate that she has to weave politics into Ben's personal exploration of who he really is. But it's her blog she can do with it as she pleases.
Her story led me to another youth, Warren Evans, who is also exploring his gender. Warren was reprimanded by his high school for failing the dress code. The news video interview with Warren shows him in the outfit he wore to school, a long curly black wig, a very feminine leather jacket, a pink, rushed, mini-skirt and platform heels. Warren is stylish and coordinates his wardrobe well. In the tag line of the news video they ask," what's Warren going to wear to the prom?" Good question.
I'm surprised that in this day and age a school administration is throwing the dress code at this youth. Everything he's wearing is OK to wear for girls. You should pick your battles carefully. I think young Warren has picked his. I hope he/she wins.
