Hi to my PINKessence Family:
I am sitting here in the after-glow of an absolutely amazing weekend. I gave away my daughter’s hand in marriage to the love of her life, her soul mate. They met 17 years ago in kindergarten when they were both six! They went through school together and even 4 years of college. They look like a little old couple that have been together forever. They are now in the Bahamas celebrating their fairytale wedding and beginning their new lives as one.
I have shared with my PE family in a previous blog on transitioning that I had planned to come out to my siblings and family after the wedding just to ensure I was not a disruption in any way to my daughters’ day. That happened on Sunday and I was not prepared for what happened. As one that is transgendered I often found it difficult not to have disdain for the reflection I saw in the mirror and forget about accepting myself; it was impossible. On Sunday after explaining my Gender Identity Disorder and her evil effects on my life my two brothers and sister stood as one with unwavering support and love. They agreed to walk the all too often lonely path of a transsexual and pledged to be with me wherever that journey may lead. One brother said he had never been more proud of me. I'm sure that there will be lots more questions, some laughter and tears. My son-in law posted in facebook that Dad is out. We are getting PINK iPhones for Christmas.
Hugs and peace for the journey,
Shelly Pladsen
Congrats, Shelly! I'm so happy for you especially as your family was reacting in such a positive way for you! You go, girl! And you really can be proud of you and proud of your family being for on your side, accepting you and supporting you! Wish you the best with love & many hugs!
Julia
Congrats ! Family support is huge in transitioning !! I wish you the best on your journey ahead !!
Comment by Erica Copeland on July 10, 2012 at 9:51pm OMG Shelly, thank you for sharing this wonderful news! You are on a roll sister! It is humbling when our loved ones suprise us like this isn't it? I'm not so worried about my daughter's response, I think she will handle it well....we're so much alike. I'm worried about my son. He's a very "macho man" athelete, and things are "black and white" with him. I feel he has always been a little confused or even ashamed of me, as I don't even know the rules of football or basketball, and like to paint and do my photography. Maybe in the end, he will suprise me too? I love him very much and hold out hope he can love the real me too. That would be very humbling indeed! Erica
Comment by Jodie Jones on July 15, 2012 at 6:00pm Oh god!! Now I HAVE to have a pink phone too!!
What a happy, uplifting vibe flows from your post, Dear. Beautiful. I will never get used to all the beauty and happiness and joy that came from finally (at my tender young age!) facing down, and standing up to, my biggest fear. Throwing off the biggest millstone.
***Bunches 'O Hugs, Shelly. You deserve all that goodness***

Comment by Dianna Davids on November 28, 2012 at 10:40pm Wow, thanks for sharing. We definitely need to talk. My daughter is getting married this coming spring, and I am also delaying moving forward with anything related to hormones or transition - so I would not cause additional drama or distractions for the wedding.
