THE ORGANIZATION

Affirmations is Metro Detroit's community center for lesbian, gay,
bisexual & transgender people and their allies. It is a 501(c)(3)
nonprofit organization serving people of all sexual orientations and
gender identities. Housed in a state-of-the-art, multi-use facility in
the heart of downtown Ferndale, at the Northern border of the City of
Detroit, it is easily accessible from across the Metro Detroit area.
Affirmations is the hub of this community, celebrating wellness,
personal growth and development, youth and the needs of its
constituents. Affirmations is the largest LGBT organization in
Michigan, and one of the ten largest in the United States.

Offered to the members and community are nationally recognized
programs in youth and health services, discussion and support groups,
Helpline, volunteer and leadership development, and social and
recreational activities. Resources of the Center include the
Pittmann-Puckett Art Gallery, General Motors Foundation Media Center,
Bayard Rustin Library, David Bohnett Cyber Center & Café, a
rooftop sky deck and excellent recreational assets, all in 17,000
square feet of space that is new, modern and accommodating. The Center
is available to the public for events and activities. Like many
non-profit organizations, Affirmations has found the need to expand
its scope of financial support. Many programs are grant-funded, and
the new Executive Director will be charged with developing sustainable
channels of funding to bring continued growth and success to the
organization.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Executive Director will be the key leader, providing vision and
building communication throughout the organization. Of strategic
importance will be promoting Affirmations across the Metro Detroit
community, supporting the organization's image with results that
resonate with patrons and funders, while working collaboratively with
organizations from the business, non-profit and public sectors to
maximize broad-based support for the organization's efforts.

The resourceful and community-focused person holding this position
will provide leadership for outreach and service to all segments
within the broader population. Using entrepreneurship and a
collaborative style, the Executive Director will foster and grow
programs and participation in new and promising directions.
Responsibilities include revenue accountability, with demonstrated
ability to partner with funders and donors to support programs and
facility budgets. Primary objectives include:

*Collaboration with the LGBT community to develop a sound
strategic plan.

*Promotional activities to drive organizational recognition,
membership and program participation.

*Management of program initiatives.

*Leadership of staff and volunteers to provide an effective and
customer-friendly environment.

*Financial management to make the most effective use of revenues
from programs and fundraising.

Affirmations is committed to serving as broad a constituency as

The Executive Director will have approximately 8 full- and 5 part-time
staff on board. Budgetary responsibility is presently $750k with
mandate to grow. Success in this position requires the ability
to lead the organization to meet the needs of its constituents.

The successful candidate must demonstrate passion, knowledge,
conviction, experience and commitment to LGBTQ people and to the
issues affecting their lives.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

The ability to work with and through people will be the most critical
quality of the successful candidate. An essential capability we seek
for this key leadership role is the building of teams to achieve
organizational goals. Demonstrated through a minimum of 3 years
progressively responsible management experience such as executive
leadership of non-profits, for-profits, higher education,
entertainment venues and other roles where profit/loss and the
management of physical assets are part of the job. Experience in
serving the public through programming and event management along with
in-depth knowledge of volunteer relations are critical assets.
Fundraising is an essential capability for success in this position,
and relevant non-profit and for-profit experience will be evaluated. A
minimum of a bachelor's degree is required, plus a record of
professional development as demonstrated by advanced education,
training and progressively responsible work experience where customer
service is a key contributor to success.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

Total compensation is competitive and dependent on the qualifications
and experience of the individual selected. The organization provides a
comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, liberal
time-off, and other attractive features.
