Wondering if people could post some of their favourite weight loss tips? Also I would be curious if any one had ideas regarding fitness that doesn't build muscle mass. Thanks so much! Jenn

Comment by Joni Roberta on February 21, 2013 at 12:09am Congratulations, Kaye Leigh!!!
I'm glad you found a system that works for you. Portion control and healthy food choices have both been important for me.
Keep up the good work!
Comment by Kaye Leigh Hauschild on February 20, 2013 at 9:00pm Well, I have changed my lifestyle and have learned a lot regarding diet, portion control and healthy eating. It became imperative that I do something when my weight approached 300 pounds. My height is such that I don't appear fat, but I was heavy and it bothered me. I found a bariatric doctor who is monitoring my health while I work with a dietician and a fitness coach. I have learned about the psychological side of eating and am learning to listen to my body. Using meal replacement shakes, replacing 2 meals a day, I have lost 40 lbs on my way to my goal of 50 lbs. With this weight loss, I now am comfortable to begin running again, with a plan of my son and I running a 5k race in May. In addition, by watching the amount of food I eat, my cholesterol is back down in the normal range and I can get a good night's sleep without my CPAP. Also, acid reflux is not a problem anymore. I feel better and the best news is that I am down 4 dress sizes!!!! When the size 16 jeans fit me perfectly and made my butt look awesome, I was so thrilled!!!
Comment by Joni Roberta on February 14, 2013 at 11:57pm Hi, Erin!
I've been walking a lot the last couple years (I average 2 miles a day) because it's easier on my knees.
I've lost quite a bit of weight in the last year, but hope to lose a bit more.
I supplement my walking a few times a week with some floor mat exercises:
simple stretches
squats
leg lifts and superman lifts
sit-ups and push-ups
This has really helped trim my tummy and my legs.
Good luck to all of you and take care :)
Comment by Erin Detty on February 14, 2013 at 11:30am Hi. I'm Erin.
I'm in good shape for 53, I weight 145 at 5' 6" I exercise everyday at the Wellness Center at the high school where I work most of the time. I ride my bike a lot when the weather is nice. I use to run, but not any more. My knees were giving me problems so I had to give it up.
I look forward to learning new things from all of you here. I'm most interested in Body Sculpting.
Thanks for having me:)
Comment by Erica Copeland on July 12, 2012 at 10:39pm Dear Amanda, thank you so much for sharing your expertise with me! The tip about changing it up is especially great. I run a loop at a state park, and I have thought about going in the other direction....I can be such a creature of habit. There are lots of hills, and to hit them at different times during my run makes a lot of sense to me.
Yes, my diet has been somewhat desperate, and unhealthy. I was so depressed being over wieght. Now is a good time to start to eat in a smarter manner. I do not eat any processed foods, but skipping meals and such is bad.
Your photos are amazing and inspirational! Thank you again for the help!
Hugs,
Erica
Comment by Amanda Strong on July 12, 2012 at 1:12am Hi Erica! First, congrats on what you've accomplished so far. I always tell the people I train to do what works for them. Everyone is different, and everyone needs to do what is right for them. Running can be hard on your knees and lower back. A "Low Impact" routine may be better. Such as Bicycling or Swimming. But still, if it's working, stick to it.
Also, ANY exercise will create changes at first, as you are "shocking" your system into something "New". But after a while, say 4-6 weeks, you should make some sort of change. Either reverse your course, if you always take the same route. Or change the speed, or add hills, or run backwards. Any change will help. otherwise your body will simply adapt.
It is now known that "Interval" or "High-Low" training produces the best results for weight loss, and overall fitness. This means, jog-sprint-jog-sprint, etc. The sprints don't have to be "all out", but definitely more intense than the "jog".
Also the sprints only have to be about 30 seconds, whereas the jogging can be 3-5 minutes, between sprints. 30 minutes combined is all you need, 3-4 times a week.
It is really not good to skip meals. It is better to eat, 5-7 times a day, but smaller meals. Same total calories. More carbs in the morning, more protein at night. Fruit should be eaten raw, and alone, without meat or other foods. And in very small quantities. Veggies should be eaten raw, or steamed. Cooked is not very good for you. A serving is no larger than your hand. A good serving of meat/poultry/fish is 4-6 ounces. Avoid complex, processed starches, white flour, white rice, pasta, etc. Eat whole grain when possible.
I don't eat any processed foods. I can't always eat organically, but I do when I can.
We are "Natural Organisms", so we are meant to eat "Natural" things.
Get a good "herbal based" multi-vitamin. Drink a gallon of water a day (3.8 liters), and don't overdo it. Be patient, and use the mirror, not the scale.
I could go on forever, but I hope this helps a bit.
Good Luck! and Hugs!-Amanda-
Comment by Erica Copeland on July 9, 2012 at 9:38am Hi Kaye! I'm no wieght loss expert, but like you I spend a lot of time driving between my accounts. One of the problems I've always had is seeing all those restaurants and food related billboards along the way~Ugh! Anyways, I've managed to lose over 50lbs so far, and feel so much more feminine! Here's how I've been doing it so far. Even though I'm almost 50 (Yikes!), I started to jog again. It was very painful and slow at first, but it is amazing what a TS girl can do when they know something will bring results in their quest! Nothing loke jogging to minimize the upper body! I had a double disc operation about 5 years ago, and thought I could never run again! Also, when on the road, generally, I don't eat much. Usually I try to skip lunch, or eat a small salad. It was hard at first, but I got used to it. I hope to lose about another 15-20 lbs. I'm so tall, 6' 2 3/4", so I need to be as thin as possible to look my best! I hope this helps....remember to harness that "TG Energy"!!!
Comment by Kaye Leigh Hauschild on July 8, 2012 at 10:53am Hi, everyone,
I am new to the group and concerned about my weight. I hope I can learn from this group, as I am not very good at staying on diets or exercising regularly. I use the excuse that my job keeps me from eating healthy and exercising, as I spend much of the day driving to and from accounts. That being said, I need to focus on what I have to do and clearly need support from a group. I hope this will help me do what I have to do.
Comment by Bethany Davis on February 24, 2012 at 9:14pm the wealth of info provided here is to be applauded. Read and re-read this girls
