My name is Larry Sagen.  I'm the founder and director of a nonprofit called FIRE 20/20.  We help fire and emergency services departments to create inclusive and safe environments for all.  I am privileged to have gotten to know and befriend Lana Moore.  She has helped FIRE 20/20 by writing an article for our newsletter and participating on a webinar we did about LGBT firefighters.  It's an honor to be a part of this group. I'm a new firefighter and EMT-B in central mass for my local fire department... I also do security on the weekends and I have applied to a local ems company for full time... i haven't come out at work but to my friends and family

I am a firefighter and EMT volunteer in NJ my EMS unit is very kind and shows great support to me. The Fire Department is a very large all boys club and they hate me. Well can not win them all.

Jamie, I have to agree with Tina, I was in the fire service in the early 80's when I got into the fire dept..There were several females in was i was there, I got out as I was in the middle of my transition it was hard enough with the men and females. today is is a lot easier for transitioning , times have changed over the years and now it is 2011 big difference. I still do EMS work but not in the normal Fire Dept.

Jamie, while it has been a male dominated career in the past in most areas, i do feel more females are being seen getting involved in the fire service. I know in the area i live, there are more and more females joining the fire service and it's not just the EMS side of it. My BF's department has several female firefighters and Trevor has no issues with going into a structure fire with either of them.

It's wonderful to find a group like this I was a firefighter 8Yrs. It's a very male dominent carrier in my area.
