I attended First Event last January for the first time. I loved it. I made new friends, enjoyed the seminars and had my first taste of the runway participating in the Fashion Show. I'm excited to do it again. Hugs, Jenny

FE11 Workshop Highlight: Middle Way: Living Contentedly between the Binary or Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun

We’ll be highlighting certain workshops at First Event 2011 as we get closer to the big event here, January 19-23, 2011. One in particular, “Middle Way”, is going to be led by Joanna Frost & Dianne Ouellette, at FE11, on Saturday, January 22, 3:30 pm, Salon B.

Joanna and Dianne are two well respected gender therapists in Massachusetts. Their workshop is entitled, “Middle Way: Living Contentedly between the Binary or Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun”. For alot of transgender persons this is a big deal. Am I on the transition path or am I not? Can I live in the gender binary at all? Is this a “plan B” if I can’t transition due to medical or other reasons? You don’t consider yourself a crossdresser but you know you aren’t a transexual, can you live in the middle fluidly and sanely?

Joanna’s and Dianne’s workshop will explore how individuals navigate the gender binary. Specifically, they will invite participants to share their personal perspectives on how they found their place on the gender spectrum. Strategies and methods used to achieve emotional tranquility and gender happiness will be discussed. Further, the concept of balance and harmony as it relates to your place on the gender spectrum will be explored.

At First Event 2009 and First Event 2010, this workshop was standing room only! So register for FE11 today and we’ll see you Saturday, January 22, 3:30 pm, Salon B. To see the entire schedule of workshops for FE11, click to the First Event Schedule

Your Next Step by Grace Stevens, FE11 Co-Chair

I have found a new guide book for my life, that I would like to share with each of you. It is by Mark Nepo and is titled The Book of Awakening: Having the Life you Want by Being Present to....

It is one of those books that is has a short 1 page reading for each day of the year. Each day I am moved and sometimes shaken by the wisdom that is presented. As I write this I am reflecting on the reading called Hospitality.

He says, “ Often the purpose of love is for others to guide us, without expectation or interference, as far as they can go, so that we might begin.”

Oh my! This has so much resonance for me at so many levels. As a parent, as a friend, as a person who is on a transgender journey, this is a wonderful addition to the meanings of “love.”

Here, at First Event 2011, we our expressing our love to each of you. In a sense, we are acting as guides, and bringing you to the edge of the water. We are providing the workshops, the parties, and the venue to meet old friends and make new ones. It is a place that provides the opportunities to both learn and play as much as you choose.

This year our theme is One Community. No matter where you are under the TG umbrella, or where you are on your own individual journey, we have worked to provide something that can fill your thirst, if you are willing to take the next step. As. Mark Nepo says, this step is for you and you alone to take. We are there to encourage and support you in this, but the next step is truly yours!

Take a deep breath, and step forward. Feel free to fill your thirst as much as you can. “Go as far as you can go” I hope you enjoy First Event 2011.

My wish for you is that you know you are loved and have the strength to take your next step here at First Event 2011.

Grace Stevens, Vice Chair, TCNE & Co-chair FE11
